A bit of offroad testing. |
Pictured to to right going around some bit of my old motorcross track on the farm. It gave me confidence as I was concened that sticking all the "expedition" type bits on it may have made it to heavy and ungainly offroad but it went ok getting up some muddy hills which can require a run up in my other 4x4 with all terrains and only a limited slip diff.
Some of the modifcations were -
Extra fuel tanks under drivers seat and small one in the rear o/s wing. Taking fuel capacity up to 180 litres and 1 jerry can. Tried to keep all the weight low down if i could.

Test campong at a Beer fesival. |
Water tank in the back, supposed to fit in the rear wing but ran out of time. Coupled to a pump for filtered and fresh water.
Two ring gas stove with dubious grill bolted to the back door with my own hand crafted stainless splash back. There is also a small water heater that runs of the gas for hot showers when we have water to spare.
Some grp waffle board things, ive never tried them before but been stuck plenty of times when they probably would have helped.
Big hi-lift jack bolted to the otherside. This is already my favourite way of jacking things up and got plenty of use swapping bits over onto this landy. Its so quick and easy to jack it up nice and high, if not a little unstable!

A spare jerry for water and fuel on the roof along with the mk1 washing machine. Not sure how well it will work but if it fails its extra storage.
Tyres, some 255/85 BFGoodrich jobs for a bit of extra height. Went with a mud pattern as we were origionally going to go down the west coast through some more jungly bits. Im sure they will be fine. Expensive but I have some on another vehicle and they have never had any problems on or off road whereas some other brands I have used have picked up punctures.
Winch, snorkel, lights, usb charging points plus an inverter. Roll cage, not that much more than a quality roof rack and you can stick stuff all over it. It will keep the weight of the aluminium roof as well. Plus it should keep you a bit safer if you should end up the wroung way up. See the Mk1 landy.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteAny plans for the car once you are done?
We are going to be looking to buy a 4x4 in SA (probably Cape Town) about when you finish your trip (all going well). Our plan is to head north probably on a similar route to you.
Thanks
Lyndsey
Hi Lyndsey,
ReplyDeleteWe are still not 100% sure what will happen with the Landy once we get there. Selling is a posibility but I wouldnt like to commit either way at this point as I would also really like to keep it. Sorry I know thats not much help.
If you want to email me at my name with a dot between first and last name, at gmail dot com then I can let you know nearer the time if thats any help?
Cheers
Byron
